Flood Mitigation

See the flood mitigation projects that will help reduce the effects of future damage.

Map of projects underway

Flood mitigation projects are in progress throughout southern Alberta. If you live in a flood-affected community, chances are there's flood mitigation work happening near you. Check out our project map to learn more about flood mitigation work underway close to home, and across southern Alberta.

Provincial and regional mitigation projects (province-wide)

These projects affect more than one specific area in Alberta.

Watershed management

Guidelines for mountain creek hazard and risk assessments, and an Alberta alluvial fan inventory and geo-hazard risk prioritization assessment (Mountain communitiies throughout Alberta)

Detailed debris hazard and risk assessments in mountain creek communities in the Town of Canmore and the Municipal District of Bighorn.
Status: Completion expected fall 2014

Weather Forecasting Review Project

River modelling, prediction and warning systems

Evaluating the effect variations in weather forecasts have on river forecasting.
Status: Completion expected May 16, 2014

Performance Measures Project (province-wide)

River modelling, prediction and warning systems

Investigating worldwide best practices of river forecasting.
Status: Completion expected May 16, 2014

Assessing Flood Vulnerability Project (province-wide)

River modelling, prediction and warning systems

Investigating how changes in duration and intensity of rainfall affect the timing of flood events.
Status: Completion expected June 30, 2014

Post-2013 Event Hydrologic Assessments (regional)

River modelling, prediction and warning systems

Define the hydrologic and hydraulic characteristics of the 2013 flood to assess, with the affected community, the need for a full mapping review.
Status: Completion expected April 2014

Flood mitigation studies

Engineering studies to review and assess flood mitigation options for Alberta's most flood-prone river basins are complete. We received final reports on March 31, 2014.
