Chair announced for Judicial Compensation Commission

EDMONTON--The appointment of E. Susan Evans, Q.C., as the Chair of the Judicial Compensation Commission was announced today by Alberta Justice Minister Jon Havelock. The Commission was established to determine the appropriate level of compensation (including benefits, allowances and pensions) for Judges of the Provincial Court. Evans will Chair the Commission that includes Louis D. Hyndman, Q.C., who was appointed by the Alberta government, and Roderick A. McLennan, Q.C., who was appointed by the judicary.

Evans graduated in law from Dalhousie University in 1978 and was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1979. She began her career in Calgary with the law firm of Bennett Jones Verchere and from 1986-1993 was the Vice-President of Law and Corporate Affairs and Corporate Secretary at Encor. Evans is currently active on numerous boards and committees and is a past member of the University of Calgary Board of Governors and a former director of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce.

The Commission is inviting written submissions on judicial compensation to:

The deadline for submissions is April 20, 1998. The Commission will present its recommendations to the Minister of Justice by June 19, 1998.
