Government accepts judicial compensation report recommendations

Edmonton - The Government of Alberta has accepted the salary and benefit recommendations of the 2000 Judicial Compensation Commission. The report of the independent commission includes recommendations on salaries and benefits for Alberta Provincial Court judges between April 1, 2000 and March 31, 2003.

J. Bruce Dunlop, chair of the commission, was appointed this May by Minister Hancock with the approval of the Alberta Provincial Judges' Association and the Chief Judge of the Provincial Court.

"I thank Mr. Dunlop for preparing a comprehensive report which takes into account the joint proposal from the government and the Provincial Judges' Association, as well as other written and oral submissions," Hancock said. "By accepting the report, we are addressing outstanding compensation issues and focusing our efforts on running an efficient and effective court system."

The following recommendations, based upon the joint proposal of the provincial government and the Alberta Provincial Judges' Association, have been accepted by the provincial government for the period of April 1, 2000 to March 31, 2003:

Although not included in the joint proposal, the government has accepted the commission's additional recommendation for a non-taxable, professional allowance of $2,500 per year beginning
