Commission to review Provincial Court judges' pay

Edmonton - An independent commission will recommend salaries and benefits for Alberta's Provincial Court judges for the period of April 1, 2003 to March 31, 2006.

An Order in Council, signed on June 24, established the Alberta Judicial Compensation Commission-an independent commission to make recommendations on compensation for Provincial Court judges and Court of Queen's Bench masters in chambers.

The three-member commission will include representatives selected by the government, the Alberta Provincial Judges Association and a mutually agreed upon chairperson.

The commission will recommend:

The commission must review all relevant written and oral submissions made to it by the Crown, the Alberta Provincial Judges Association, individual judges and members of the public.

As a result of the 2000 Provincial Court Compensation Commission report, Alberta's Provincial Court Judges were paid $170,000 per year between April 1, 2000 to March 31, 2003. Alberta currently has one Chief Judge, nine Assistant Chief Judges and 94 Provincial Court Judges. There are also seven provincially appointed masters in chambers assigned to the Court of Queen's Bench.
