Commissioner to review judges' compensation
Edmonton - An independent commissioner will review and recommend salaries and benefits for Alberta's Judges and Masters in Chambers for the period of April 1, 2006 to March 31, 2009.
Mr. John M. Moreau, QC, will make recommendations on the appropriate level of compensation. Mr. Moreau's legal practice specializes in mediation and arbitration. His appointment was agreed to by the Alberta Provincial Judges Association, the Masters, and Alberta Justice Minister and Attorney General Ron Stevens.
As commissioner, Mr. Moreau will recommend:
Under Alberta law, Mr. Moreau must review all relevant written and oral submissions made to him by the Crown, Judges and Masters, and members of the public. Mr. Moreau will hold one public hearing in Calgary on Thursday, June 15, at 9 a.m. in the Calgary Court House, 611 - 4 Street SW, Calgary. His recommendations are to be submitted to government by this fall.
Alberta's compensation process for Provincial Court Judges and Masters is governed by Alberta's Judicature Act. The process was created to ensure both fairness and judicial independence. The next review will be in 2009.
