Local groups benefit from $360,000 in restorative justice grants
Edmonton... Programs that hold offenders more accountable to the community and offer opportunities to victims of crime to be more involved in the justice system are getting a boost from the Alberta government.
Sixteen restorative justice initiatives across the province are receiving just over $361,000. The grants will be used for such things as victim-offender mediation, restorative justice training and leadership development in schools and establishing an Aboriginal justice circle.
"Restorative justice programs play an important role in the criminal justice system," said Harvey Cenaiko, Solicitor General and Minister of Public Security. "They provide a voluntary, collaborative approach in which victims feel safe and empowered, offenders are held accountable and communities are involved."
Restorative justice programs are used as an alternative or supplement to any sentence such as house arrest, probation or a jail term and can be initiated at any time during the criminal justice process.
Grant recipients include non-profit associations and community-based organizations.
