Media's help solves mystery of unidentified man
Medical Examiner seeks assistance identifying second man
Edmonton... Leonard Lee Smith, of Edmonton, has been identified as the man whose body was found in a ravine near Snow Valley Ski Club on March 18, 2007.
The Medical Examiner's office received numerous phone calls and a number of solid leads after the man's photograph was released to media in May. The tips led investigators to the man's family in Ontario. DNA tests confirmed the 60-year-old's identity.
"We're very pleased that we've been able to identify this individual," said Dennis Caufield, Medical Investigator. "Without the help of the media, it would have been much more difficult for us to solicit the public's help."
The Medical Examiner's office is now asking for the public's assistance in another case where a man's body cannot be identified. The two cases are unrelated.
The body of an adult male was found in an apartment building at 118 Avenue and 56 Street in Edmonton on May 6. He was wearing a black Point Zero brand shirt, a black windbreaker jacket with a "Banff Ridge" crest, black jeans and a Wilson Velocity brand hooded pullover. The man is estimated to be in his 20s or 30s, is just over six feet in height and weighs approximately 175 pounds. He has a short brush-cut type hairstyle and a short, sparse goatee. He has no obvious scars.
No person matching his description has been reported missing to the Edmonton Police Service Missing Persons Unit. His death is not considered suspicious.
Anyone with information that might assist in identifying this man is encouraged to call the Medical Examiner's Office in Edmonton at (780) 427 4987.
