Fatality inquiry dates postponed

Edmonton... An additional date has been set for the inquiry into the death Ted James Meiorin. The June dates originally scheduled for Carrie Anne Rivait have been cancelled.

On November 11, 2004, Carrie Rivait was found unresponsive at a private residence while on statutory release. The cause of death was cocaine and morphine toxicity.

These dates have been cancelled. No new dates have been scheduled.

On March 26, 2006, Ted James Meiorin became unresponsive shortly after being restrained by police. The cause of death was cocaine-induced excited delirium. Inquiry September 13-14.

They are intended to ensure that all parties understand the purposes of the inquiry, what issues will be explored, and what procedures will be followed. No witnesses are called and no evidence is introduced.

Public inquiries held under the Fatality Inquiries Act are limited to establishing the cause, manner, time, place and circumstances of death, as well as the identity of the deceased. The judge may make recommendations on the prevention of similar occurrences but is prohibited, under the act, from making findings of legal responsibility
