“Today thousands of Albertans join more than 1.8 billion Muslims across the world in marking the start of Ramadan.

“Over the next 30 days, Muslims will fast from sunrise to sunset as an act of worship and submission to Allah. Celebrated on the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is revered as a time for spiritual reflection, self-discipline and devotion.

“During the coming weeks, Muslims will give back to their communities and engage in acts of charity. They will also gather with family and friends to enjoy their evening meals, known as iftar, where they will pray and show gratitude for the blessings received throughout the month.

“To all those observing Ramadan, may you be filled with peace, joy, gratitude and serenity.

“Ramadan Mubarak!”
